Highlights of the Electric Jeep Wrangler 4xe
Written by Interstate Dodge Chrysler Jeep Ram
Ladies and gentlemen, Jeep is going eco-friendly! In 2021, the Jeep Wrangler will introduce the 4xe, which takes the 2.0-liter turbocharged four-cylinder engine and combines it with hybrid elements to provide up to 375 horsepower. The new hybrid engine will be the most capable, technically advanced, and eco-friendly Jeep Wrangler ever. The Wrangler 4xe’s plug-in hybrid is capable of 25-miles of whisper-quiet, electric-only propulsion, which makes it one of the most consumer-friendly vehicles on the road and taking driver confidence and 4×4 capability to the next level. There is a lot more to cover with the all-new electric Jeep Wrangler. Continue reading for more information!
The Most Advanced Powertrain Ever
The Jeep Wrangler 4xe integrates two different electric motors and a 400-volt battery pack with the Wranglers 2.0-liter turbocharged four-cylinder engine and the Torqueflite eight-speed automatic transmission. This massive amount of efficiency helps the engine produce up to 375 horsepower and 470 lb-ft of torque and an estimated 50 MPG. The engine adds in a high-voltage, liquid-cooled motor generator that sits at the front of the engine. A very robust belt connects the motor-generator to the engine crankshaft pulley while the motor-generator helps spin the engine for effortless and fuel-saving operation while generating electricity for the battery pack. When the binary clutch is closed, the torque from the 2.0-liter engine and e-motor flow combine nicely through the automatic transmission, which improves drivability and efficiency.
E Selec Modes
The Jeep Wrangler 4xe tailors each drive to the driver’s taste using the hybrid powertrain. There are three different modes of operation, which are known collectively as the E-Selec. The driver can select the desired drive mode thanks to the buttons on the instrument panel located to the left of the steering wheel. No matter what mode the driver selects, the Wrangler 4xe operates as a hybrid once the battery reaches a minimum state of charge. The first available mode is called the hybrid, which blends the torque from the 2.0-liter engine with the electric motor. While the Wrangler is in this mode, the powertrain will use the battery power first and then mix in propulsion from the 2.0-liter. Next up is the Electric mode that operates on the electric power only until the battery reaches a minimum level of charge or the driver needs more torque. The last mode is the eSave, which prioritizes the 2.0-liter engine and saves the battery for later use for things such as off-roading. The driver can choose between Battery Save and Battery Charge during the eSave mode, thanks to the Hybrid Electric Pages in the Uconnect screen.
Regenerative Braking
It’s easy to get the best out of the E-Selec system as the Wrangler 4xe driver information display and the Uconnect screen add in Eco Coaching Pages that let the driver monitor the power flow and see the impact of the regenerative braking. You can also schedule charging time so that you can take advantage of the lowered electric rates and view their driving history down to the electric and gasoline usage details. The regenerative braking is a critical part of the Wrangler 4xe’s eco-friendly nature. When the driver presses down on the brake pedal, the engine control engages the maximum amount of regenerative braking. The regenerative braking feature also extends the replacement period of the brake pads. When the 4×4 is engaged, all-four wheels capture the torque for regenerative braking while also maximizing the energy recovery. The electricity caused by the regenerative braking is fed to the battery pack to maintain or increase a state of charge.
